Historical Town Hall

Image Copyright: Peter Hennig

The Gothic Town Hall used to stand in the middle of the Rathausplatz. The Town Hall burned down during the Seven-Year-War in 1757.From the ashes one was able to salvage the town's crest from 1533 and the two lions. The Town Hall was rebuilt by Karl August Schramm after plans by his teacherSchinkel in the years 1840to 1845. The lions decorate now the main staircase, the town's crest was walled-in at the south side of the Town Hall.

The staircases are embellished with wonderful leaded windows, which depict Zittau's town history.Especially attractive are also the rich decorated Brgersaal and the four life-size figures.

Town Hall guided tours are on offer always on a Wednesday at 3pm.
